At first, Riverdale was a rural settlement with few businesses or residents since its access to the river made shipping and transportation difficult. However, over time, people from surrounding towns started moving into Riverdale so that it could become more like their own community. Today, many of the original residents still live there and work in nearby industries such as manufacturing and transportation. The first school in Riverdale was built in 1879-80 by white parents George Washington Headrick and Sarah Woodward Headrick with help from donations from other settlers. The school served only black students until 1892 when it became racially integrated with all students sharing one building shared by both sexes until 1978 when separate schools were opened for whites and minorities separately
