Riverdale is a small town in Georgia that was founded in 1837. It is located on the Cumberland River, about 20 miles north of Atlanta. In 1906, due to racial riots taking place throughout America, Georgia governor John Blythe ordered all white households within 10 miles of Atlanta be closed until further notice He also called upon all black households within those same boundaries to leave their homes “until further orders” According to historian Ellen Kushner these orders were motivated by fears that black Atlantans would join together with whites during the rioting which was taking place throughout America at this time

The Riverdale community in northeast Georgia was settled by families from the upper South in the 1830s. The town, founded on a small stream called the Rockmart Fork, grew rapidly thanks to its location near the railroad and its access to water. By the 1860s, Riverdale had a population of around 350 people and was one of the most important towns in eastern Georgia. When the Confederate States of America was formed in 1861, Riverdale became part of Virginia. However, because it was located within Georgia's then-unitary state, Riverdale remained part of Georgia until 1865 when it seceded to join the Confederacy. After Richmond capitulated and Union soldiers captured Atlanta, Georgia in April 1864, all Confederate troops were mustered out and most of riverdale's residents moved away. Some returned during Reconstruction while others left again after Reconstruction ended. Today, little remains of what once were instructional institutions or other vital services that helped make Riverdale a thriving community. Nonetheless, through commemoration and education programs – both public and private – Riverdale has emerged as an interesting footnote in southeastern Georgians' history.
There are many theories about the origin of Riverdale. Some say that it is from a Welsh name, Rothaedd; others believe that it is from the Dutch word "Roche", meaning valley or stream.
