In 1865, Confederate General Robert Easley surrendered here after his army was defeated at Battle of Chattahoochee Bridge. From 1870 until 1945 Richmond Hill experienced a period of rapid population growth due to agricultural production which produced many jobs for both men and women. However during that time there were also several major events which caused significant changes within the community such as World War II when Japanese Americans were interned here and then later integrated into American society; or Hurricane Katrina which caused extensive damage to much of the community including most of its cotton crop In recent years there have been several attempts by developers to turn Richmond Hill into an upscale residential community with high-end amenities like golf courses and swimming pools but these efforts have not been successful so far and no new development has taken place in spite of numerous requests from residents over the past few years. Despite this though there are still some families who maintain their traditional lifestyle characterized by agriculture, gardening, cross breeding livestock, spinning woolen yarns etc., which gives life to this small town The main attraction for visitors to Richmond Hills are undoubtedly its beautiful countryside setting surrounded by rolling hills covered with trees and gardens as well as its rich history dating back centuries For those looking for more modern amenities like shopping malls or restaurants they will need to travel further downriver towards Augusta or DeKalb Counties where those areas have more developed economies Overall though it can be said that despite some challenges – such as lack of development - RichmondHill remains an interesting place with a rich history that makes it worth visiting

The town's name derived from the hill that stands to its northwest and which marks the original boundary of the plantations. In 1865, Confederate general Jubal Early arrived in Richmond Hill with his army while retreating from Cold Harbor and began construction of Fort Pillow on Catawba Island. The fort served as a base of operations forEarly's raids into northeastern Georgia during the war. After Early's surrender at Appomattox Court House, many of his forces turned over their arms and left Richmond Hill behind; these men formed what became known as "The Lost Battalion." In 1868, Jeter & Morey Civil War Silk Mill was built on Catawba Island by John Jeter and John Morey. At first it produced only silk ribbons; but later it became one of the most important yards in country for manufacturing cotton goods such as clothing, shoes and bedding products. The mill closed in 1965 but some remnants remain today among specimens collected by archaeologists working at nearby Sandy Springs Museum of Art (now Sandy Springs State University).
Richmond Hill was founded in 1802 by John Randolph. The town became a state capital in 1847, and in 1865 it was renamed Atlanta.
