In the early 1800s, Powder Springs was a small town on the Chattahoochee River in south Georgia. The town was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants and quickly became a center for cotton cultivation. By 1825, Powder Springs had a population of around 2,000 people. The town's fortunes changed when General Andrew Jackson awarded it to the United States in 1828 as part of the Treaty of Gadsden. In 1836, Powder Springs became the capital of Georgia under Jackson. The city experienced rapid growth during the antebellum period, reaching its peak in 1840 with a population of over 10,000 people. However, by 1850, powder sprouts had spread throughout downtown and much of the rest of the city was abandoned. The city's architecture is largely influenced by Greek Revival and Victorian styles. Many prominent buildings in Powder Springs were built during this time including Congress Hall (1830), State Capitol (1836), High School (1840), courthouse (1850), and Post Office (1860). Unfortunately, many of these structures were destroyed or damaged by fire or other accidents during the late 19th century and early 20th century. However, several important civic amenities such as an library and waterworks remain today and are still used by locals today. Powder Springs has long been associated with naval warfare due to its strategic location on both sides of the Chattahoochee River between Atlanta and Chattanooga. During World War II, Powder Springs served as one of three ports for Naval Base Savannah on Georgian Bayou near Jacksonville Beach Florida; also providing access to Charleston International Airport for naval aviation operations from 1945-1947. Today parts of downtown are home to multiple businesses that support military contracting activity such as ATK weapons manufacturer Northrop Grumman Corporation; US Marine Corps ammunition plant Camp Lejeune; Decatur County Sheriff’s Department substation located adjacent to City Hall; along with numerous other government agencies across multiple services that provide critical governmental function within our community including but not limited to: education; law enforcement; healthcare/healthcare resources; social welfare/ Welfare assistance programs(such as food stamps); environmental justice program(s); homeland security
