Powder Springs is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 9,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Powder Springs was founded in 1847 and incorporated as a city in 1870. The name of the city comes from the Cherokee word "powdered" which means "to make clean." In 1863, Confederate General Robert Ewell decided to move his army from Chattanooga to Powder Springs because of its strategic location on the Chattahoochee River between Dalton and Rome. He named it after General John Fenton Powell who had fought with him at Chickamauga and First Battle of Bull Run. After the war, Powder Springs became an important cotton semi-industrial center with many large manufacturing plants such as Pulte Rent-A-Car and Monsanto Company. However, during the early 2000s economic recession it began to lose its importance as a industrial center due to competition from more rapidly growing cities such as Atlanta and Jacksonville. In recent years however, some new businesses have started up in Powderspring such as Highland Coffee Roasters (founded by two brothers), One Tree Coffee & Bakery (a chain based out of Chattanooga), Woodstock Coffee Roasters (based out of Gainesville), and Cascadia Coffee Cafe (whose coffee beans are grown right here in Powderspring).
Powder Springs, Georgia is a small town located in Macon County, Georgia. It was founded in 1819 by Nathaniel Pendleton and his brother James as a stop on the Underground Railroad. The name "Powder Springs" comes from the Cherokee word "a'apatunti," meaning "place where wind originates." In 1898, the first post office in Powder Springs opened with mail from Chattanooga, Tennessee. The population of Powder Springs was 1,500 when it became an incorporated municipality in 1905. Today, Powder Springs has a population of about 508 and is home to several hospitals and businesses. Powder Springs history begins with Nathaniel Pendleton and James Pendleton. When they were young boys their parents died so they had to leave their homes in North Carolina to live on the Underground Railroad. They made their way down through South Carolina until they reached Alabama where they met some Cherokee people who were helping escaped slaves escape to Georgia. They decided to stay with the Cherokee people for a while before returning home to start a new life for themselves and their children. In 1819, they founded what is now known as Powder Spring Township when they came across land that would be suitable for farming. After settling there, they began building some of the first homes in what is now Powder Spring Township. The family went on to become very successful farmers and ranchers over time; however, one of their most famous accomplishments was creating the first school in what is now Powder Spring Township- which taught African Americans how to read and write at this time! One of Nathaniel's sons also started an insurance company that became very successful! For many years after that point, all three Pendletons lived together on their farmstead near present day Dayton Street (near Third Street). In 1905, when Powder Spring Township formulated its own government separate from Macon County under the provisions of then state law #2-141 (the Municipal Code), it voted overwhelmingly (by motion) to become an incorporated municipality within Macon County limits! This happened because residents wanted more control over their own lives and future; feeling like they were not being treated fairly by county officials who did not seem interested in supporting local businesses or community members alike!
