By 1907, Powder Springs had become an incorporated municipality with its own government and school system. In 1929, the city limit was increased to include all of present-day Powder Springs proper as well as parts of adjacent villages including Maple Grove and Mableton Heights. The growth of Powder Springs continued until World War II when it all but disappeared during the conflict that occurred across southern Georgia*. Powder Springs is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Powder Springs was founded by Colonel John Covered wagon road on December 3, 1802 as an isolated post on the Chattahoochee River. In 1804 it became the capital of what would become the Georgia Territory. The first store in Powder Springs was built by Elijah Price and Charles Goodnight in 1805. A mill was built in 1807 by George Washington Kimball and operated until 1840. In 1830, William English moved to Powder Springs from Savannah with his family and started a grocery business called English's Grocery which still stands today. In 1847, when Lumpkin County was created from part of Fulton County, Powder Springs came within its borders. In 1850 it had a population of 1,000 people and served as the county seat for Lumpkin County until1866 when Augusta became its new county seat. The first school in Powder Spring was opened in 1796 by Rev James Robertson with twenty-six pupils under instruction for two months each week during winter term; but this institution did not continue long because lack of funds prevented any permanent building being erected until 1797 when a log cabin replaced the original structure which fell down due to bad weathering after only six months useage A brick school house stood until 1861 when it caught fire causing much damage In 1865 Union General Pemberton forced Confederate General Burnside out of Chattanooga and into Sherman's army where he surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865 . From then on Reconstruction began across America as freedmen were re-enfranchised On October 15th 1870 Augustus Troup organized a local militia company known as "The Grays" to protect citizens against raids by white supremacists led by Nathan Bedford Forrest . On November 10th 1870 an agreement between Forrest and Powder Spring Citizen Marshal Jno Henshaw allowed African Americans to vote for their first time ever within this segregated society . The result showed that African Americans constituted about 20% of both public officials (federal judges) and private individuals ( mechanics , farmers etc.) although they made up only 12% of total residents
Powder Springs was founded in 1802 by General James Wilkinson and his family. The town grew rapidly and soon became a center of learning, trade, and culture. The Wilkinson family left Powder Springs in 1836 to found nearby Rome, Georgia.
