Powder Springs is a town in Putnam County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is the largest town in Putnam County. The towns ofjoining Powder Springs were consolidated into it in 1907. The town is named after powder (a type of lead) springs that are found near its location on the Chattahoochee River. The first white settler in the area was John Montgomery who located a cabin and mill on the banks of the river in 1793. The community name originated with early British settlers who called it "Poison Spring". In 1803, General James Wilkinson sent Colonel Nathan Bedford Forrest to take possession of what became Powder Springs from Major Hugh Williamson's Creek Cherokee Confederacy force under British command. In 1807, when Georgia became a state, Virginia granted petition for incorporation to be made an unincorporated village within Georgiana county; but this request was turned down by Governor Blount because he believed that an incorporated village would increase development opportunities for Petersburg and other nearby settlements which he wanted to keep open for military purposes. When new US President James Kenedy arrived in Georgia on July 6, 1809, he announced his intention to move eastward from Savannah through what is now Atlanta and see if there might be land available for White men outside of Savannah where he could establish plantations or live as aristocrats like his father had done before him. On July 20th Nathanael Greene sent word back to General Wilkinson that there were no grants available for whites beyond present day Putnam County and suggested they tryodynamicating with Native Americans instead so as not to spook them too much; however General Wilkinson decided against giving up any more territory and ordered Colonel Forrest to take over all activities within our boundarieswww2). By 1830 there were only a few hundred people living around Fort Payne on the Chattahoochee River due primarily to malaria caused by mosquitos which could not be controlled by European-raised crops like rice or cotton so fortifications were built including earthworks lining both sides of the river which still exist today (the modern Fort Payne State Park opened in 1916). However during Jackson's American Civil War efforts against secessionist forces known as "The Alabama Campaign" many men from Powder Springs enlisted with Confederate forces fighting at Cold Harbor along Withrow Creek Rd.) In 1861 when Confederate Gen Robert Ewell began his retreat across Dalton Fromman's Mill Road towards Jonesboro due south of Atlanta one regiment led by Captain Samuel Hance detached itself northeastward past Paulding Mountain towards Decatur where they encountered Federal troops under George Meade leading an attack against Hood's army west of Atlanta - this battle resulted in Hance being captured along with most of his unit eventually becoming part of Union Gen Joseph Johnston's army after Battle Of Gettysburgww3). Aftermath following defeat at Battle Of Gettysburg many men from Powder Springs deserted their units seeking revenge either joining Confederate forces again or returning home w4). Many women also left their homes during this time including Sarah Cobb who later married Confederate Lt Col William Troupew5). Many women returned home after 1865 when Reconstruction endedww6) although some continued to reside among their former families until well into World War II7) After World War II many residents moved away such as Edwin Walker who founded Walker Paper Mills here8) while others chose rural lifestyles such as Alice Frazier9) until finally retired here full time about fifteen years ago10), she continues operations out side her house today11). One remaining resident currently resides here w12)), also one active farmer still grows crops here13)). Today Powder Springs enjoys relatively high levels economic stability compared to most places throughout southeastern United States14)) Although small businesses have been greatly impacted recently due mainlyto competition from larger stores15)), overall Powderspringians generally remain friendly and welcoming16)).
