In 1881, the first Coast Guard Station in Powder Springs was established. The station served as a warning center for residents of the area and acted as a source of law and order. In 1923, the Coast Guard detachment here began serving as an auxiliary service to the Georgia National Guard. In 1954, the Headquarters Commandant's Office moved from Atlanta to Powder Springs. On July 1, 1966, the Coast Guard detachment in Powder Springs became an operational unit of the Georgia National Guard. As part of this change, all offices within the detachment were moved to Fulton County Headquarters Building on Cox Mill Road in Powder Springs. As time passed and new technology was developed by our military and civilian counterparts alike, so too did coastal guard gifts become more sophisticated. Powder Springs is a city in metro Atlanta, United States. The population was 146 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fulton County metropolitan area. It is also the home of Georgia Tech University and one of two cities in Fulton County that are both designated as "global city" by UNESCO. Powder Springs began as a small settlement on the Chattahoochee River southwest of modern-day Powder Springs, Georgia. In 1802, an American Revolutionary War veteran named James Fenton established a farmstead called Fenton's Station on the Chattahoochee River, about six miles southeast of present-day Powder Springs. The first courthouse in what would become Powder Springs was built in 1825 on State Street near today's Patterson Parkade shopping center. The town gradually grew and by 1830 had a population of 350 people. In 1831, settlers renamed the settled area "Powder Spring" after General Robert Ewell who was killed during the Battle of Chickamauga Creek while leading an army against General Thomas Hood's forces. In 1835, Congress passed An Act to Encourage Manufactures and Commerce in Southeast Georgia (3 Stat., No 4), which created powder mills along with other industries such as tanning and papermaking at what would become known as "the Pomona Mills". The mills produced cotton textiles for export until 1862 when they closed due to Union military action around Chattanooga following the Battle of Lookout Mountain. In 1865, during Reconstruction days following America's re-birth from Confederate slavery, Powder Spring became part of newly formed Atlanta Territory from northern Alabama and southern Mississippi forming what is now Fulton County . With its growing population came new development including streetscape improvement; construction began on both Ponce de Leon Avenue (later Dunwoody Road) running through downtown into today's Southside neighborhood eastward to Peachtree Road; Commercial Boulevard ran southward paralleling Interstate 20 between DeKalb Avenue/Candler Highway/Old Fourth Ward Boulevard (now Sandy Bridge Rd.) northward to where it meets I-20 North near Stone Mountain Parkway; Third Street ran parallel with DeKalb Avenue providing access to downtown from either side but has since been truncated terminating at I-20 just west of Stone Mountain Parkway exit ramp
