In 1862, the Powder Springs Union Army was called to duty in Georgia. The small town of Powder Springs saw its first battle against Confederate soldiers on February 14, 1862 when a detachment from Company A, 3rd Georgia Infantry Regiment fought against Confederate forces. The Union army quickly defeated the Confederates and the town quickly increased in population as people arrived from surrounding areas to join the war effort. The citizens of Powder Springs soon began to invest in supplies and equipment for their military unit. In 1863, they donated artillery pieces, ammunition, and other supplies to help their fellow soldiers fight. By 1865, the town hadkellized into an entire regiment of cavalrymen under General James Meeks. Throughout its history, the Powder Springs Union Army has been a source of inspiration to many residents. From 1861-1865, the town played an important role in helping support the war effort and later returned home with medals and honors for their service. Today, many descendants of those who served in the army live in Powder Springs and continue to contribute to its community by volunteering or working at local businesses.

The Powder Springs, Georgia Army National Guard was activated on October 14th, 1861. The first unit to arrive in the town was Company K of the 2nd Georgia Infantry Regiment. Other units that arrived in early 1862 were Companies A and B of the 1st Georgia Infantry Regiment and Company G of the 3rd Georgia Infantry Regiment. On November 8th, 1862, Confederate General Jubal Early attacked Union forces at Chickamauga Ridge. This battle led to a strategic victory for the Confederacy and began what would be an unrelenting offensive against Union forces throughout the war. By 1865, there were over 140 active infantry regiment in Peach County alone.
Powder Springs, Georgia is a small city located in the southeastern United States. It is the county seat of Sullivan County and has a population of around 100,000 people. The city was founded in 1827 by squatters from North Carolina. Powder Springs was first known as "The Mills" because of its location near the milling villages of Millinocket and Barnstable. In 1851, the town changed its name to Powder Springs after General Andrew Jackson's victory in the Battle of New Orleans. After Jackson's death, his widow became the proprietor of The Daily Review newspaper and moved it to Powder Springs from her home in Athens, Georgia. The paper was published until it merged with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution in 1906. Today, Powder Springs remains an important center for government and business withinSullivan County. There are several notable businesses located within the city limits including Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, Phillips Petroleum Company, Coca Cola Refreshment Plant No 1 & 2 and Northwest Marine Depot #1 which handled shipping containers during World War II as part of naval warfare efforts against Japan. Additionally, several museums are located within or close to Price Avenue throughout the city including powder springs museum which is open daily 9am-5pm (except holidays) and features displays on local history; Smithsonian American History Museum - open daily 10am-4pm; Banning House Museum - open Friday 9am-4pm; courthouse - opened every day except Mondays from 9am to 4pm;and Hatcher Knox Art Gallery - open Friday 10am-4pm from 11am to 5pm
