The Powder Springs Air Force Base was founded on July 17, 1942, when the United StatesAAF activated its first fighter squadron, The 323rd Fighter Group. Today’s Wright-Patterson AFB is home to the USAF’s Top Gun Training School and several other squadrons. In 1951, the wing was redesignated as the 433rd Fighter Wing and inactivated on October 15, 1952. The wing reformed at Dowden AB on November 1st, 1954 as the 431st Fighter Wing. This unit served with F-4E Phantom jets until its inactivation on October 15th of that year. On September 8th of 1961, Headquarters USAF activated the 413th Tactical Airlift Squadron (TAS) at Dowden AFB under control of Ninth Air Force elements assigned to provide airlift for Operation John F Kennedy Presidential funeral ceremonies in Dallas. The 413 TAS became operational with C-130 Hercules transports operated by 47 Military Airlift Commandbased at Dowden AFB from December 1962 to May 1966; it then flew Boeing KC-135 Stratotankers until being transferred to RAF Lakenheath AB England in 1976; it last flew an KC-135 Stratotanker from Dowden AFB before its closure in 1981. Today’s 437th Airlift Wing provides airlift for major US military exercises including Joint Warrior and Global War On Terrorism deployments worldwide while also providing support services to local agencies such as Polk County Schools and Valley Forge University.
