Pooler is a small town in Middle Georgia. It is located on the banks of the Chattahoochee River, about 25 miles south of Atlanta. The population was 1,953 at the 2010 census. The name Pooler comes from two local boys who pooled their money to buy a farm in 1887. The community that developed around the farm was named Poolerville after them. In 1924, when pooling became illegal in most states, Poolerville merged with nearby Dothan to form one village called Dothanpoolerville. In 1946, Poolerville changed its name to Pooler and incorporated as a city under state law. At first it had no municipal services but it soon began building schools, sewers and other public works which helped make it an important center for rural commerce and industry in central Georgia. In 1968, when Atlanta annexed all of Middle Georgia, Poolerville became part of the new city limits and lost its status as a municipally-supported town. However, it still enjoys some degree of autonomy within the larger city government and has made large contributions to both its economy and infrastructure over the years. Today there are more than 20 businesses in Pooler descended from those that operated before fusion happened: such as Ponds Unlimited Fishing & Hunting Supply store (the only licensed shop remaining), Waffle House restaurant (now closed), Hardware store (closed) and many others that have since disappeared or been sold off or relocated elsewhere withinAtlanta proper or beyond its borders; but there are also several dozen residents who continue to call this picturesque small town home despite all these changes - forever unchanged by modernity's advance!
