Perry is a town in Cobb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 3,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The community was named after General George Washington and began as a small settlement on the Chattahoochee River. Perry was incorporated as a town in 1872. In 1895, it became an independent municipality with its own government and court system. In 1906, Perry became the seat of government for Cobb County and has been that location since then. The name "Perry" comes from General George Washington's home county of Georgia and means "place where water lay." The first settler in Perry was Elisha Pike, who arrived in 1794. He built a cabin on what is now State Route 6 near present-day Peachtree City to store goods he brought overland from his plantation in North Carolina during the brief boom time around 1800-1801. In 1824, Colonel James Darnall established a post office at Perry with sixthalers per day from Athens (then called Athens Green). By 1830, there were twelve such posts throughout the state; seven were located within Cobb County but five more were scattered around other counties as well because transportation costs were high when compared to other regions of Georgia at that time. When Andrew Jackson was elected president on November 4th, 1828 – just three weeks before he assumed office – he appointed Johnathan Holmes as Postmaster at Perry with authority to issue mail calculated to bring settlers into this newly formed nation rather than relying solely upon Bristol or Augusta which had large populations but very limited postal capabilities due to cost and distance issues respectively. When hostilities broke out between England and France in 1812/13 – known as War of 1812 – British forces burned down several villages along the Chattahoochee River including one called “Avery” (now known as Acworth) which claimed by Americans under General James Aiken for service against their British counterparts some thirteen years earlier! So too did another village called “Milton” located about four miles north of today’s town limits! All told these events destroyed many homes across eastern Tennessee including one belonging to Colonel Darnall himself! Aftermath: Many families lost everything they had acquired during this conflict not only within Cherokee Nation but alsosouthwest Alabama!!! This high rate of destruction led some residents relocated southward following news reports describing English settlements burning down near Savannah GA instead so they could continue enjoying their property despite being displaced thereby forming what would become known today as “The Great Migration”... meaning people who left their homes behind migrated primarily towards areas like Atlanta where job opportunities were available!!!!!! The name is most likely derived from the Choctaw word "perry," meaning "a sweet small apple." Perry was founded in 1887 by J.C. Robertson and A.H. Smith as a trading post on the Chattahoochee River opposite to what is now Decatur. In 1898, Perry became an incorporated town when it had a total population of 2,500 people. The first school in Perry was built in 1887 by J.C. Robertson and A.H. Smith and opened for grades one through four that year with two teachers and 24 students; the first high school (grades five through eight) opened in 1903 with 10 teachers and 252 students; the present high school was built in 1956; and the Webster Avenue Baptist Church was dedicated on December 15th of that year as the first church building in Perry after being donated by Mrs Lillie Boynton from Peachtree City, Georgia who also served as pastor of First Baptist Church of Decatur from 1895 until her death on November 16th of that year In 1907-1908 local businessmen John Cavanaugh (1862-1947)and Waddell Cobb (1857-1936)organized what would become known as Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity Incorporated which later changed its name to Theta Chi Omega Fraternity Incorporated due to objections by some members who saw it as an infringement of their rights as members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Incorporated which at that time still bore its original name The Potter's Field Race Track located near present day downtown Perry opened on October 6th 1902 hosting horse racing only events until 1938 when video poker began operations there On April 7th 1912 various stores along Main Street between 5th Avenue South and 8th Avenue South were destroyed by fire caused by unknown arsonists overnight causing extensive damage including $2,000 worth of items lost A new store - Peoples Hardware - was constructed candy wise replacing all other available businesses around this time including Post Office Annexe which burned down October 12th 1916 during World War I while under construction In 1923 Cherokee High School opened south of town off US 85 just past milepost 6½ north On September 25th 1928 denominational changes happened within Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity Incorporation resulting in many more names change such as: Nationalist/Iamcian/Delta Zeta Sorority Incorporation changed their membership flags but kept their pledging ceremonies etc., then again changing back to Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity Incorporation less than one week later on October 26TH following a Pledge Drive event planned at Cherokee High School involving local citizens across all levels represented including parents auxiliaries children Scouts helpers anyone interested please come join us we will have refreshments
