The Perry National Guard was organized on May 15, 1885. The Citizen's Militia of Georgia was chartered as the first national guard unit in Perry County. The first Armory in Perry was built in 1895 and is still used today. The county seat for Perry County was moved from Athens to Perry in 1907. The national guard units were eventually disbanded throughout the country during World War I due to military manpower shortages. However, the 12th Georgia Infantry Regiment (10th Infantry Division) re-formed in 1920 and remained active until 1945 when it folded into the Army Reserve. In 1942, as part of the United States war effort, a new state militia called the Georgia National Guard was formed by combining elements of both existing state militias. This army-sponsored militia served alongside U.S. forces during World War II and became known as the "Perry Guardsmen." In 1946, following the end of World War II, many of these troops were redeployed back to their home states to help fight off Communism; however, only a few hundred troops ever returned to Georgia because of budgetary limitations set by President Harry S Truman early in his presidency. On November 3rd, 1948, Governor Newton Baker signed into law an act creating GAC 10-1 which allowed any male citizen over 21 years old who had been discharged or honorably released from service with any branch of the U S Armed Forces since activation date (December 31st 1947) to become a member or reserve member of the National Guard anywhere within this country without having theretofore enlisted or applied for membership with any other organization or authority hereinbefore existing; also provided that such person shall be subject at all times to such laws and regulations as may be prescribed by said [National Guard] Commanders hereinafter mentioned...
