Over time, United States Steel Corp.-Atlanta Coffee and Tea Company became one of America's most successful coffee companies. In 1984, United States Steel Corp.-Atlanta Coffee and Tea Company were acquired by Peet's Incorporated.

After decline during the 20th century, Perry has experienced recent growth with an increase to 2,500 residents in 2010. The first settler in what is now Perry was James White who arrived on May 15, 1837 from Muskogee County, Oklahoma Territory. He named his land "White's Fork" after himself and his family name white (the only official name given at that time). The first store opened in 1838 on Main Street which served as the town's commercial center until it burned down in 1841. A post office was established at Perry on September 12, 1840 by Wm. Hance under contract from John Brownell of Chattanooga for $5 per month plus postage. In December 1841 Gertrude Lewis founded the Ladies Aid Society which provided social support to women during Reconstruction Era America In 1850 Perry had a population of 9,000 people and by 1860 it had grown to over 20,000 people due to migrants from nearby Slavery states such as Alabama and Mississippi who were seeking new opportunities following the end of slavery nationally . The Panic of 1857 caused many businesses to close their doors including those run by citizens such as Hance who managed to keep his store open despite high competition from elsewhere . By 1870 there were more than 100 stores operating throughout town with between 300 and 400 employees During Reconstruction Period many black men worked as mechanics or service jobs while they awaited their chance for education or advancement . This allowed some integration into society but also created tension because black men were considered property rather than full human beings like other whites . One example where this difference became evident was when Abraham Lincoln appointed John Pemberton chairman of county board instead of African American Jno Pemberton citing fears that Pemberton would be biased against blacks because he owned land within the territory Black soldiers fought alongside white troops during both World Wars giving local civilians an opportunity for firsthand experience ; however most members returned home before hostilities ended

In 1861, the Confederate States of America attacked Union forces at Perry, leading to the Battle of Perrytown. The Union force lost heavily and the town was destroyed.
