Since the Revolutionary War, the Georgia Army has been a part of the state's history. The military has been an important part of Georgian culture and society for centuries, and is still present today in various forms across the Peach State. The Georgia Army was first organized as a militia on October 15, 1775, by General James Oglethorpe. The Militia Act of 1776 granted civil power to the Georgia Military District, which was composed of all counties in what is nowGeorgia. The Militia Act also created a regiment for each county within the district. On December 14, 1777, General Oglethorpe ordered all militia companies in Georgia to prepare for war against France. When hostilities began in North America on September 11th, 1778, the Georgia Regiment was among those called up to fight. Aftermath reports from soldiers at Yorktown show that many Georgians enlisted with distinction and fought heroically under their general’s command: Major General Hugh Mercer (1756-1825), Colonel David Southeastern (1760-1834), Lieutenant Colonel Joseph McDowell (1761-1820) and Captain John Anderson (1762-1821). During wartime service members were typically given rations and paychecks directly into their pockets rather than taking them to town or bank where they would be auctioned off after discharge or exchanged between units. This practice continued until 1815 when coins started being issued as currency instead of rounds or paper money denominations like dollars and cents. In 1801 Governor Andrew Jackson signed legislation creating a state army based on British models and authorized its organization with four regiments totaling 800 men divided into two brigades under Brigadier General Nathan Bedford Forrest (1800-1882). In 1802 Confederate forces burned down Fort Sumter in South Carolina so Jackson ordered Forrest’s brigade to march into Savannah to relieve it under cover of darkness without provocation from Confederate troops garrisoning the fortifications. When news reached Atlanta that Union forces had evacuated Charleston two days later Forrest marched his brigade back northward through Demonstrator Valley towards Augusta where he camped for three nights before marching onward again tomorrow morning - this event is generally considered as beginning Chattanooga Campaign which led ultimately to Civil War 2 years later On November 21st 1812 three companies of Cherokee warriors underCaptain James Coker attacked a detachment of United States Cavalry near Riga River Bridge killing one officer and wounding six others including Captains John Pemberton(USMA)and Ulysses S Grant(USA). LtCol William Troup commanding Company K decided not pursue because there were too many Indians ahead while Capt Pemberton pursued anyway leading his battalion over open ground towards fortified positions having lost most men except 1stLt James McIntosh who took shelter behind trees until evening when he relieved his companyman at point blank range driving off any pursuing Indians seen coming after him Col Troup then reported this action back home sick at home without ever seeing combat even though he had commanded company during engagement

It served as the armory for the First Regiment of Georgia Infantry from 1912-1914 and then became the Second Regiment of Georgia Infantry armory from 1914-1920.
