Peachtree City is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 25,830 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. As of the 2000 Census, Peachtree City had a total area of 24 square miles (75 km²).
The town was founded in 1837 by James Peachtree and others as part of the new county seat for Fulton County. In 1853, it became a municipality when parts of Fulton and Spalding counties were combined into the new state of Georgia. The city annexed portions of Decatur County in 1906 and was renamed Peachtree City following annexation.
In July 1957, due to concerns about coal dust particles drifting over Interstate 20 from rural areas east of Atlanta, the Georgia Railroad Commission ordered all trains traveling inside Atlanta to stop at every interchange between I-20 and I-285 until further notice. This order caused traffic problems for motorists travelling withinAtlanta but also created some opportunities for business people and students who took public transportation to reach their destinations without having to leave their cars at an interchange or take longer trips on more dangerous highways.
