Peachtree City, Georgia was founded in 1807 by James Peachtree and his family. The town became an important center for cotton production after the planting of the first cotton fields in the area. During the early 1800s, Peachtree City was a thriving community with a population of around 2,500 people. By 1850, however, the town had shrunk to just 100 residents due to a combination of factors including increased competition from other agricultural towns and a changing economy. Despite its reduced size, Peachtree City continued to be an important cultural and commercial center during this time. In 1872, Peachtree City became part of the newly created Atlanta metropolitan area and experienced growth as new businesses opened up in the city. By 1970, however, dramatic changes were happening in Atlanta which led to Peachtree City's decline as a vibrant community. With income levels dropping and crime increasing, many residents left the city for greener pastures. Today, much of what is left of PeachtreaCity is preserved as part of efforts to keep it alive as a historic site.
