The Coast Guard in Peachtree City, Georgia first began operating as a branch of the military in 1913. The Coast Guard was created to provide coastal security and protect ships and people from piracy. In 1951, the Coast Guard became an independent agency within the United States Department of Defense. The Coast Guard's mission continues to be maritime security and public safety on our Nation's coasts. As part of its maritime security mission, the Coast Guard patrols more than 2,000 miles of coastline in Georgia and Alabama. Alongside law enforcement officers, we rely on air support to conduct search and rescues when necessary. Our coast guard is also responsible for maintaining 18 miles of beach front in Southwest Atlanta. This sandy strip offers swimming, sunbathing, fishing, bird watching and more opportunities for recreation while providing emergency medical access during storms or other emergencies. In addition to its duties as a police officer on our beaches, the Coast Guard also provides emergency Preparedness services including response to natural disasters such as hurricanes Katrina and Rita; search and rescue operations during earthquakes or tsunamis; shoreline clean-up operations following accidents;and hazardous materials operations related to oil spills or terrorism threats along our nation's coasts

Peachtree City, Georgia was founded in 1824 by General James Peachtree. The city was named for General Peachtree's plantation in the Cherokee Nation. It grew rapidly due to its location on a navigable stream and its access to trade with the Southeast. In 1829, the United States government granted Peachtree City incorporation as a town. The first mayor of Peachtree City was Nathaniel Hines. In 1865, after several months of fighting during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert Ewell surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia and Peachtree City became part of the Union side. During Reconstruction, Peachtree City experienced rapid growth thanks to its status as an engaged community and its ability to absorb large numbers of African Americans who had previously been discriminated against by their white neighbors. By 1870, the population of Peachtree City had reached 100,000 people. The city's economy diversified over time and it prospered becoming one of the most important industrial centers in Georgia. Peachtree City is a city in metro Atlanta, United States. The population was 72,865 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Georgia after Atlanta. The Peachtree City Civic Center serves as the home of a variety of events and meetings for the city's residents and organizations. The first settlement in what is now Peachtree City was made up of families who left Marietta on July 4, 1820 to found a new town on the Chattahoochee River known as Newbern. A small community developed around this site until 1825 when settlers abandoned it because of persecution by the Cherokee Indians. In 1853, General Nathan Bedford Forrest led an expedition against the Cherokee that resulted in their burning of Newbern and massacre of its inhabitants; this event is sometimes called the Battle of Newbern. The town was rebuilt and named for General Forrest; it became part of metropolitan Atlanta on April 14, 1907. In 1916, peachtrees were planted all over centralAtlanta as part of an effort to improve air quality due to concerns about carbon dioxide levels resulting from industrial activity in nearby Decatur County during World War I).
