The first settler in what is now Peachtree City was James Southerland (1792-1869). He arrived with his family from Tennessee around 1800 and erected a small cabin on what is now Second Street near Fayetteville Road. Southerland had two sons: James (1801-1868)and John (1802-1876). James married Anna Hawkins (died 1853), daughter of Drury Hawkins Sr., one of original investors in Cherokee County (later Fulton County) north of Atlanta. James' brother John also settled here about this time; he married Elizabeth Gillett (died 1840).
