The name "Peachtree" comes from the Cherokee word "payhti". The first settlement in what is now Peachtree City was made by white farmers in 1852 and it grew rapidly due to cotton production. In 1881, pecan trees were planted on land that now makes up much of downtown Peachtree City. Today, many businesses in downtown Peachtree City are based off of their fruit or nut crops such as apple cider vinegar and peanut butter. Peachtree City has a rich history dating back to 1793 when Captain John Smith discovered new tracts of land between Savannah and Augusta along the Chattahoochee River. Pointe de la Hache built a house on this site in 1827 and named it after himself - La Hache House (now called Pointe de la Hache Park). He also founded Fort Jackson which served as a post for trading with Native Americans along the river system. After America's defeat in World War II, most of these fortifications were destroyed but parts remain today including Fort Jackson Museum which tells the story of American commerce during that time period In 1886, territorial Governor Joseph Pickens ordered construction begun on what would become Atlanta's first public school - East Atlanta School District #2's Highland Park Schoolhouse (now known as Lamar High School).
