Norcross is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The name "Norcross" comes from two early settler families: Norris and Cross. The first permanent white settler in Norcross was John Norris, who arrived in 1784. He settled on a farm that still stands near present-day Norcross Corner Road and White Street. Another early settler, Isaac Cross, built a house on what is nowNorth Avenue in 1802. In 1820, the Georgia General Assembly passed an act establishing Muscogee County and creating the town of Norcross as its county seat. The first courthouse was built in 1825 on what is now US-70 east of downtown Norcross. Norross became an incorporated municipality in 1881 when it joined Muscogee County under the leadership of Mayor John Pemberton (1841-1910). At that time, it had a total population of 1,500 residents and included only parts of present-day Norcross; most notably Eastside Drive and White Street north of downtown. A fire destroyed much of Norross during 1904–05; however, with help from local volunteer firefighters and donations from people throughout Muscogee County, reconstruction began almost immediately and soon enough new homes were being erected onsite including many for African Americans who had recently come to live in Georgia after being banned by their states’ Republican governments during Reconstruction period
