Norcross, Georgia was founded in 1807 as a small frontier town. It quickly became a important center of the slave trade, and later became an important cotton plantation town. The Norcross community has experienced many different phases in its history, including a period of decline during the 1960s and 1970s, when economic conditions deteriorated in the area. However, since the 1990s, Norcross has undergone a dramatic transformation that has seen it become one of the most vibrant southern towns. Norcross is located on the Altamaha River near what is now Athens-Clarke County. The town was originally laid out on land that had been used by early European settlers for farming and hunting. In 1807, construction began on what would become Norcross' first permanent structure - a log cabin known as "The Old House." By 1840, however, Norross had reached its peak as a slave trading center. At this point, about 50% of all slaves brought to Georgia were from Norcross. In 1860, following Confederate soldiers' retreat from Atlanta following the Battle of Bull Run (20 July 1861), General Robert E. Lee ordered his troops to abandon their positions within Confederate territory and march northward into Tennessee under orders not to engage any Union forces pending further instructions from Richmond. Approximately 2200 men abandoned their units at Prentiss's Mill on May 6th; these men formed two companies which marched eastward unescorted through rural areas until they reached Horsehoe Creek Bridge at milepost 568 northeast of Atlanta on May 8th (). There they stopped for lunch before continuing their march towards Chattanooga (), where they were met by Union cavalry Detachment A under Colonel John Waddell (). After having marched over 260 miles nonstop!, Company 'A' arrived at Chattanooga on June 9th (). They disembarked there and started marching northwest along Broadway (), commanded by Major James Shields ()until reaching Lookout Mountain (); then turning southwest along Hiwassee Road () until reaching Overton Avenue (), at which point Major Shields ordered them halting () because he believed that pursuit would be launched against them by Confederate cavalry already stationed around Chattanooga (). Thereafter Company 'A' proceeded down Overton Avenue back to Chattanooga while Captain John Hargrave's detachment continued moving northwest along Hiwassee Road until reaching First Street (), where they halted again because there appeared to be no other avenues open beyond First Street () without being engaged by Union forces present around Chattanooga(). On account of this halt Captain Hargrave ordered his detachment back up hill towards Lookout Mountain but after about 800 feet he decided against continuing due to heavy fire from artillery batteries located nearby atop Lookout Hill (). Onlookers thought it likely that either Captain Hargrave or his detachment had perished [] . Although some sources claim that some members of Company 'A' may have made it back home safely but with serious injuries or dead (e.g., Captains Edward Stroud and Lewis McGowan), more likely most if not all participants returned safely home only after being evacuated via ambulance boat [] .
