In Norcross, Georgia, coffee gift history begins with the early days of Dutch coffee plantation life in what is now the city of Norcross. The first European settlers in this area were the Van Doren family, who founded a small Coffee shop on High Street in 1795. The first coffee roasters in Norcross were James & John Coffeemakers, located at 515-517 High St. From 1898 through 1912, The Olde World Coffee Company was a major player in the coffee industry in Norcross and vicinity. In 1912 they merged with Nesbitt’s Coffee Company which was then known as American National Corporation. American National Corporation was acquired by Roanoke Coffee Incorporated on October 20th, 1951. Roanoke Coffee Incorporated continued to offer its unique brands including Olde World and Nesbitt’s until it ceased operations on November 15th, 1978. After American National Corporation ceased operations there were several other companies that offered coffee before Starbucks opened their doors in 1995. These include Green Grown beans from Africa (owned by Nestle) which began brewing ground coffee here in Norcross on April 1st, 1995; Peet’s Coffee which began selling pods of COFFEE from convenience stores soon after; Dunkin’ Donuts beginning selling donuts here starting January 12th 1993; and last but not least White Castle opening up shop here on December 16th 1990 making this one of the earliest Starbucks locations outside of Seattle! It should be noted that all these businesses started out as small mom and pop cafes! Starbucks quickly became an overnight sensation throughout Atlanta with over 2 million square feet leased across more than 60 buildings! Once they had arrived in Norcross they quickly established themselves as one of our most popular local businesses! They continue to serve up delicious food items such as lattes, sandwiches, espressos and more since opening their doors back in 1995! Over time they have also ventured into other genres such as tea (launching their own teavana venture) and even alcohol ( founding their own bar). Today Starbucks remains one of our favorite local businesses across Atlanta!
