Norcross was founded in 1801 as a small Liberia settlement founded by Captain John Gregg and his wife Judith Randolph Gregg. They named their settlement after their father-in-law Nathaniel Greene's home town of Norfolk, Virginia (now Norfolk Beach). Captain Gregg died young in Georgia before he could bring his family to Liberia with him and they named their settlement for him instead.
