Newnan, Georgia is an incorporated town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 20,812 at the 2010 census. It is the namesake of Newnan, a small town in south-central Georgia. Newnan's first settlers were people who came from Tennessee in 1817 and1818. They named their new community after President James K. Polk of the United States during his term as president from 1845 to 1849. In 1885, Newnan became part of Atlanta and its boundaries changed accordingly although the name of the town never did change. The first post office was established in Newnan on January 5, 1830 by John Brownell with a letter "N." The current post office building was built in 1909 and is located on Commerce Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Street. In 1840, General Nathan Bedford Forrest arrived in what is now Fulton County and began construction of Fort Pillow near what is now downtown Newnan. He called it "Fort Pillow" because he thought that it would be more difficult for attacking Native Americans to get through than if he used the name "Newnan." The fort was completed in 1846 but later abandoned because of problems with faulty construction materials and lack of food supplies for garrison troops. In 1865, General Robert Ewell's Confederate Army invaded northeast Georgia under Commander Braxton Bragg with orders to capture Atlanta before winter setTLTember 4th - Atlanta had been successfully defended against repeated Union assaults since December 1st 1862 when Sherman's army crossed over into southeast Georgia under orders from George McClellan #4! On November 17th 1865 ( Thanksgiving Day), three days after General McClellan'sArmy left Savannah for Greensboro#2) Union forces attacked Fort Pillow from two directions--southwest on Highway 99W which led down to Chattahoochee River where they assaulted Confederate positions while artillery bombarded Fort Pillow; northwest along Interstate 95E which connected Savannah with Greensboro; east along Government Road leading northward out of town past Wheeler Field Reserve some distance west of present day University Park Drive which served as Confederate Headquarters during this Campaign! Colonel Newton Lovejoy commanded Federal Forces at this point IN addition to Lieutenant Colonel Richard Horry commanding Confederate Troops NE OF Turner Field where IFS Battle began...On November 27th 1865 (Christmas Day), about midnight A forced march by Federal Infantry across open country resulted In A successful Uprising Against Confederate Forces At Turner Field By Major Samuel Johnson With British Reconnaissance Units Included! Although outnumbered numerically by Confederates About 50 To One Our Men fought gallantly & Lost only 3 killed & 13 wounded however 5 Officers & 11 enlisted men including 2 Captains were captured !!!!!
