The town of Newnan was founded by Welsh settlers in 1820 and named for Captain John Newnham who had served as an American officer during the Napoleonic Wars. In 1872, new land was acquired from a group of Cherokee Indians to create the city limits which now make up nearly one-third of the current boundaries of Newnan. In 1914, Newnan merchants convened to form what would become known as the "Newnan Merchants Association". The association's purpose was to promote trade within and outside of Newnan and support local businesses. Today, membership in the Association continues to be an important factor in municipal governance and economic development in downtown Newnan. On December 3rd, 1865, Confederate General Jubal Early arrived at Fort Cobb with 1,500 men looking for information on Union movements in central Georgia. He discovered that many people living near Atlanta were friendly towards Union troops and decided not to press his war effort any further southward into states loyal to secede fromthe Confederacy; instead he turned northward and continued his march through central Georgia towards Montgomery where he ultimately surrendered on April 12th, 1865
