Newnan, Georgia (population: 30,000) is a small town located in east-central Georgia. The community was founded in 1818 by General James Wilkinson as the new capital of the Creek Nation. Newnan was first named "Natchez" and later changed to "Newnan." The name stuck and the town became known for its rich cotton crop,Manufacturing industry, medical center, and schools. In 1954, Newnan became an independent municipality. Today, Newnan enjoys a reputation as an educational center with five universities and two colleges within the city limits.

Newnan, Georgia is a small town located in DeKalb County, Georgia. The population was 1,694 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of DeKalb County. Newnan began as an agricultural village on the banks of the Chattahoochee River in 1837 and grew rapidly because of its location near Atlanta and its access to railroad tracks. By 1920, Newnan had become a busy commercial center with several thousand residents and a large number of businesses. In 1924, Congress designated Newnan as the capital of Georgia afterAtlanta became the state capital. The town continued to grow until 1980 when it lost its status as the county seat because Gwinnett County was established as a separate county without having any connection to Newnan. Newnan is home to two colleges: Spelman College, which offers undergraduate programs in arts and humanities; and Kennesaw State University, which offers graduate degrees in education, business administration, law enforcement administration, health information technology/medical records management, architecture/engineering and rhetoric/linguistics. Additionally, there are several dozen churches including Baptist Churches of Greater Atlanta (BCGA) (founded 1895), First Presbyterian Church (1897), Methodist Episcopal Church (1901), United Methodist Church (1905), Catholic Parish of St Cloud-Newnan Catholic Center (1927), Christkindlmarkt & Kirche Gottliebe-Nanninger Neumann GmbH (1993) and Lutheran Community Services Of America - Old Stratholme Chapel Inc./Trinity Lutheran School Of Religion And Health Care services for adults with developmental disabilities(2002).
Newnan, Georgia was founded in 1785 by Captain James Robertson and his family. It became a town on the Chattahoochee River in 1802 and remained an agricultural center until the late 19th century. Newnan's economy was based on agriculture, fisheries, and retail trade. The town's first school was opened in 1811. In 1868, Newnan became the capital of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. The city lost its importance after the war but regained it in the 1970s when Atlanta moved to its present location.
