Newnan is a small town in northeast Georgia, located on the Chattahoochee River. It was founded in 1824 by white settlers, and has been the county seat of Gwinnett County since 1881. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Gwinnett County were French traders and missionaries who established a mission here in 1824. By 1830, most of the original colonists had died from fever or other causes brought over by the American Revolution. A few families remained until 1881 when Gwinnett County was created from parts of Fulton and Cherokee counties. Newnan became its first permanent home after becoming part of Atlanta proper during Reconstruction. As Atlanta grew increasingly diverse, so too did Newnan's economy - contributing significantly to both social stability and economic opportunities for all residents. In recent decades, however, Newnan's traditional economy has seen some decline as recently employed individuals have moved out of the area into larger metropolitan areas such as Atlanta or Savannah. However, thanks to radial transportation connections emanating from downtown Atlanta (including I-285), Newnan remains an important center for culture, commerce and education within Cobb County overall - making it one of Atlantans' most vibrant communities
