Newnan is a city in Georgia that was founded in 1875 by James W. Hardin, a cotton planter and son of the earlier settler John Hardin. The city grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its location on the railroad and its importance as a military post for Confederate forces during the American Civil War. Newnan's growth slowed after World War II, however, as factories closed and jobs moved to larger cities. Today, Newnan is an important cultural and economic center in central Georgia, with a population of over 120,000 (2010). Newnan was originally named "Hannibal," after General Hannibal Hamlin, who had fought in the American Civil War on behalf of the Confederacy. After the war ended, Hardin changed the name to "Newnan" in honor of General James Witherspoon Knox, who had led Union forces against Confederate forces at Chickamauga Ridge. Knox had also helped found Atlanta in 1821. In 1830, Andrew Pickens built a cabin next to what is now downtown Newnan; Pickens later became one of United States Senator Jacob Javits' mentors and friends. In 1835-6, Nathan Bedford Forrest founded his own cavalry regiment here called Forrest's Volunteer Cavalry Regiment No 1 (FVCR1). The FVCR1 served under Forrest until he was captured by Union troops at Vicksburg in 1863. Forrest was then put on trial for treason before Ulysses S. Grant and received a sentence of life imprisonment instead of death as he would have been eligible for under Confederate law! The FVCR1 reorganized into two battalions under Captains George Armstrong Custer and Philip Sheridan on January 15th 1865 when they reached Mobile Heights outside Petersburg Alabama after driving off Confederates from that strategic position following their victory at Gettysburg!
