Moultrie is a small town located in Paulding County, Georgia. The population was 1,827 at the 2000 census. Moultrie is known for its peach orchards and farmers markets. The first people to live in what is now Moultrie were the Creek Indians. They fished and hunted here until about 1790 when General James Wilkinson moved them west to Indian Territory. In 1802, Moultrie was established as a town by order of General Andrew Jackson. It was named after Major John Moultrie, an American Revolutionary War veteran who fought under Admiral Sir William Howe. In 1835, several miles north of Moultrie, local citizens built Fort Gaines to protect their trading post from Cherokee Indians led by Chief Osage Attacka which had recently attacked and burned nearby settlements. The fort served as a base of operations for the military campaigns against the Cherokees beginning in 1837 and ending in 1841. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate forces unsuccessfully besieged Union Forces garrisoned at Fort Gaines while also attacking other Southern towns and villages along the Chattahoochee River including Moultrie; this action helped win Confederate Battlefields legislation allowing Confederate forces unrestricted access to captured Union materiel throughout the war era.
