Moultrie is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,907 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Moultrie was founded in 1837 by James Moultrie Sr., a Scottishman who arrived in North America as a trader and then developed the region into an agricultural community. In 1898, Moultrie became the county seat of Fulton County and has continued to serve as its primary cultural and economic center ever since. Moultrie's history can be traced back to 1837, when James Moultrie Sr., a Scottishman, disembarked on Georgian Bay from his ship "Alexander" after travelling through North America for many years. He had originally come overland from Scotland on horseback and wagon with his brother-in-law John Rankin to sell land along the Savannah River in what is now southeastern Georgia. Upon landing at Horseshoe Bayou (now Sandy Springs), he erected some wooden buildings for himself and his family before becoming involved with local farming operations which he ran until 1840 when he sold all his holdings north of Sandy Springs to Jobnathan McIntosh for $4,000 cash. From hereon out, James would play an important role in developing southern Georgia's agriculture sector; purchasing land wholesale or selling it outright to farmers who used it for their crops or livestock. James' son John also played an important role in the town's growth; starting a blacksmith shop and later founding The Masonic Lodge #2 (later renamed The Masonic Temple) in 1851 which served as the town's social center until 1978 when it was replaced by Moultrie Community Hall which still stands today as one of Fulton County's most iconic landmarks. In addition to musichall shows (e.g., "The Big Apple", "Crazy Horse"), dance halls (e.g., "Dance Queen", etc.), theaters ( notably "The Mahoning Opera House" built between 1865-1867), gambling dens (e.g., The Gambling House) and other businesses that dot the townscape today - these days they are often referred to simply as 'the old days', indicative of how much interest has been preservationism – both within Moultrie itself and throughout southcentral Georgia during its history! Moultrie is a small town in Georgia, United States. The population was 2,744 at the 2010 census. Moultrie is located in Muskegon County. Moultrie was founded in 1837 by Nicholas Moultrie and his wife Hannah. The name "Moultrie" comes from the Scottish word moulin, meaning mill or house of spinning yarn. In 1892, the railroad arrived to town, helping to spur development and increase attendance at the local school. Over time, other businesses followed suit: a grocery store in 1902; auto parts store in 1916; post office in 1922; and a concrete garage and warehouse in 1944. Today, the only business left standing is the convenience store on Main Street which has been open since 1951. The community experienced some hard times during World War II due to production shortages within the war industry. However, through its activism and support for local businesses, Moultrie bounced back quickly after the war ended and continues to grow today with strong cultural ties to Scotland - more so than any other American city of its size!
