Although coffee was first roasted in Monterrey, Mexico about 1,500 years ago, the first true artisanal coffee was roast by a small group of farmers and roasters in Monroe, Georgia in the early 1800s. The first espresso machines were made in Italy and were used to roast whole beans for sale direct to consumers. The popularity of artisanal coffee quickly spread throughout America, with roasters starting to specialize in different flavors and techniques. In 1922, Artisan Coffee Roasters opened the world’s first drive-thru coffee window. This allowed customers to order their coffee right at the restaurant! The popularity of this unconventional approach led to other innovative businesses such as Artisan Coffee & Donuts which became one of the largest independently owned cafes in America. In the late 1990s and 2000s, artisanal coffee started to become more popular outside of North America. However, Monroe has still remained a leader in this field with many talented roasters continuing to produce great tasting coffees that are enjoyed by all.

Monroe, Georgia is a town in metro Atlanta, United States. The population was 30,993 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fulton County metropolitan area. Monroe is located on the east bank of the Chattahoochee River and has a total area of 26 square miles (67 square kilometers). As one of the smallest towns in Fulton County by population size and as one of its most affluent, it has been an important center for business and cultural life since its incorporation as a town in 1871. The name "Monroe" comes from two Montgomery County citizens who donated land to form the town: John Moncrief and James Monroe. The first post office was established in 1871; Monroe had a population of only 7 people when it incorporated. The first store was built on what is now Main Street. In 1880, an oil refinery was constructed near what is now Midtown Plaza Shopping Center; this helped begin Monroe's economic development as an industrial center. In the early 21st century, there were several attempts to change or remove Monroe from its central location within Fulton County by residents or businesses that felt that it did not have enough growth potential or needed more attention from government services than it received from county officials. In 2013, developers announced they were planning to build over 100 new homes in downtown Monroe within five years; many residents felt this would be too much development without added support including infrastructure such as streets and sidewalks, which they said could not keep up with traffic demands. After public protests against the plan began to take place throughout Fulton County, local officials decided to delay until after 2020 any further changes to their zoning laws that would allow for increased development nearby without providing additional funding for pedestrian and street improvements specifically designed for pedestrians and cyclists

After the war, many Southern states seceded from the United States, forming a new nation known as The Confederacy. In 1871, Monroe became part of that new nation and renamed itself Georgia; it remained an independent country until World War II when it joined the United States as a result of the 1945 Allied victory over Nazi Germany. Today, Monroe is a thriving community full of historical landmarks and outdoor attractions including two museums: The George Washington University Museum of Fine Arts (GWUMA) which contains art from throughout history and current exhibitions celebrating GWU's centenary year; and Park Avenue Historic District which includes several historic residences dating back to before 1800s
