Monroe, Georgia is home to the United States Army Garrison of Savannah. The first military post in the area was Fort Troup in 1802. The garrison served as a military training ground for the Georgia Militia and was abandoned in 1812 when the British occupied Savannah. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson moved his army from Tennessee to find new allies against Britain. He decided on moving south and attacked Fort Troup, which surrendered without resistance on July 16, 1814. Jackson ordered all supplies and personnel be burned within sight of the fort. The burning of the fort demonstrated America's resolve to fight against Great Britain. In 1865, General Sherman's march through Georgia resulted in an influx of soldiers into Monroe from nearby states. In 1898, during World War I, Monroe became part of Military District 1 under General John J Cox before becoming a separate district under Lieutenant Colonel George Smith on October 15th of that year. On November 1st 1914 the Commandant at Fort Gordon announced that they were closing down their military post because it was being used by Confederate forces as a hospital during World War I; aftermath saw many GI's streaming into town for medical treatment Unknown to them Fort Gordon would continue operations as an artillery battery until it closed its doors again in 1929

Monroe grew rapidly during the early 1800s as an agricultural center supplying food for Atlanta and other parts of Georgia and Alabama. Afterrailroads arrived in this area in the 1830s, resulting in a significant increase in trade and commerce that supported traditional Georgian culture while also opening up new opportunities for white settlement and development. However, by 1850 only 2% of the population lived here; most residents were descended from freed slaves or their owners' sons or daughters who had already moved away or died during slavery times.
