This gift was one of the biggest ever received by the USAF and it represented years of hard work by pilots and crewmembers from all over America! Monroe was founded in 1802 by James Monroe, the 5th president of the United States. The town was named for John Quincy Adams, who had served as Secretary of State under President George Washington. The town rapidly developed and became a center of politics and culture in the antebellum period. In 1838, Monroe was renamed Atlanta after General Sherman’s army reached the town from Georgia. The city grew rapidly but faced financial challenges until it became self-sufficient in 1870.Atlanta’s economy diversified during its growth and contributions to society have been significant both locally and nationally. After Reconstruction, Atlanta experienced rapid growth as a major cultural and business center in post-civil rights America. In 1990, Atlanta received the National Historic Landmark designation for its role in American history. The first residents of Monroe were farmers who arrived around 1795 when an area west of what is now downtown was granted to them by General Creekhead as part of a land grant given to him by Queen Anne (1736-1816). Creekhead built a large farmstead on what is now Ponce de Leon Street, which he called Lick Creek Station because he found water there that could be used for farming purposes only during low tide levels. By 1802, settlers had built homes near what is now Ponce de Leon Boulevard and Auburn Avenue

In 1837, Monroe became the capital of Georgia. The city continued to grow and by 1880 it had become a bustling metropolis with a population of 1,500 people.
