Milton is a small town in DeKalb County, Georgia, United States. It was founded in 1824 by English colonists as Milton Plantation and became an agricultural town. In the mid-19th century, Milton became a manufacturing center for cotton textiles and shoes. The economy declined during the Great Depression and World War II, but has since recovered. The community currently consists of a mix of white and black residents. Milton was originally settled by English colonists in 1824 as Milton Plantation on land granted to them by the Cherokee Nation. The name derived from the old English word "milt" meaning "plain." The first settler, John Snelling, named his home Milton after his birthplace—Manchester, England—where he had been born in 1784. By 1830, there were around 100 people living in Milton. The early settlers were mostly Methodists who came from Yorkshire (now part of north Manchester). Many of these men brought their wives and children with them when they arrived in Georgia; some families stayed for many years because they found new land attractive than what they had back home. For about three decades after their arrival, most of the new arrivals engaged in agriculture or worked odd jobs to support their families while waiting for developments that would make life easier on the plantation society they had left behind: large plantations with hundreds of slaves were not available until after Reconstruction began in 1868 when African Americans were given legal rights as citizens of America under the Fifteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution (the beginning of racial integration). In 1829–30 Governor Nathan Bedford Forrest set out to purchase 1 million acres (500 km²) eastward from Creek Indians at what is now Lithonia so that a cotton plantation could be established there; this acquisition led to much speculation among planters about whether such an area might also contain valuable resources such as coal or oil reserves which would justify building such a large plantation on Indian Territory without compensation from those responsible for its development – Indians being considered squatters rather than owners who leased their land for economic gain like white landowners did with other lands acquired through treaty negotiations between Native American tribes and European explorers/importers over several centuries prior. One group of entrepreneurs who bought into this speculative opportunity was Aiken & Worth Publishers where James Aiken played an important role starting up publishing companies throughout southeastern Alabama including one here at Lithonia where he published law books and pamphlets under various pseudonyms including “Drury Lane” before moving permanently to Atlanta circa 1800 In 1830 John Snelling built himself a log cabin near present day Milton on Government Road just east of US Hwy 278 opposite mile marker 55 on GA Rd 281 He named it "Milton" after his childhood home back home England.. The town grew rapidly after the railroad arrived in 1845, and by 1865 it had more than 5,000 residents. In the 1870s and 1880s, Milton became a center for cotton farming, with plantations dotting the landscape. However, during the late 19th century and early 20th century, Milton slid into poverty and decline. Its population dwindled to just over 1,000 in 1920; by 1930 only about 350 people lived there. But during World War II Milton came to life as a wartime bomber base and industrial village. It lost its status as a small town when the war ended but slowly regained some of its former prominence as a bedroom community for Atlanta.
