The Marine Corps Deployment Gift History Museum in Milton, Georgia preserves the history of Marines who have deployed to support our country. The museum is open every Saturday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., and admission is free. There are many different items on display, including uniforms, medals, equipment and more. In 1942, the Marine Corps Infantry Training Center (MILT) was opened in Milton. This facility trained future Marines for World War II. From here they were sent to various theaters of war around the world. In 1946, MILT became the Marine Barracks and Training Center (MBTC). MBTC was also home to the 1st Battalion 3rd Marines during World War II and served as an infantry training ground for both American and European troops untilactivated in 1973. Since its inception, MILT has been a major player in shaping the marine experience worldwide. It has played host to numerous commands throughout our history; each with their own unique flavor that continues to this day! Past command units that have called at MILT include: 6th Marine Division (1948-1949), 5th Fleet (1991-1993), 1st Marine Aircraft Wing (1989-1991), 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing (1986-1988), 3rd Naval Forces Central Pacific (1987-1992) Today’s active duty marines continue their education at MILT through summer barracks programs which offer courses such as pistolnery and marksmanship instruction as well as basic infantry skills such as formation drill and casualty evacuation procedures
