In 1898, Milton had its own telephone system and began offering phone service from local companies like Atlantia Telephone Company and Southern Electric Company. In 1922, a gristmill was built in Milton and became one of the most important assets in the town. The mill changed hands many times but always returned to ownership by someone who wanted to operate it commercially. In 1951, a new jail was built in Milton and remains one of the most popular attractions for visitors to this small city today. This jail also served as an important factor in helping create stability within the community during difficult times such as World War II when food shortages occurred throughout much of America due to rationing programs instituted by President Franklin D Roosevelt

Milton’s economy has been diverse throughout its history; it has been a mill town full of textile mills and other manufacturing businesses over the years.
