The Milton, Georgia Army National Guard was founded on November 5, 1875. The first unit toasus the battlefield was Company C of the 1st Infantry Regiment, which fought in the Mexican-American War. From then until World War II, the militia played a significant role in defense of the state and its citizens. In 1947, Milton became an independent city. As part of this transformation, the military arm of city government was renamed the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA). In 1984, Milton adopted its current name: The City of Milton (COM). The City of Milton has a rich history that includes service in both world wars and Operation Neptune’s Spear during Gulf War II. The city also boasts a proud tradition of community activism; from supporting literacy campaigns to fighting for affordable housing and environmental justice. After he left Boston for Georgia in 1753 to serve as a delegate to the Second Continental Congress, he became an important advocate for American independence. In 1774, he drafted the Declaration of Independence and helped lead the fight for it at home and abroad. Over time, Milton developed close relationships with key leaders in Washington D.C., including George Washington and John Adams. He also served as secretary to President James K. Polk during his first term in office (1849-1851). When that presidency ended, Milton returned to Massachusetts where he died in 1892. Milton is considered one of America's most influential Founding Fathers because of his dedication to democracy, advocacy for independence, and service to his community. He is also remembered for his contributions to poetry and philosophy - two areas that were greatly affected by his life experiences. For example, when he wrote The Republic (1787), which argued for government should be limited only by reason and not by force or authority from above; or when he published The Poetical Works (1795-1800), which explored human nature and its limitations through writingabout everyday situations. These works have been instrumental in shaping modern thinking about politics and morality. In addition, they have been highly influential both domestically and internationally - helping shape policy on issues such as labor rights, education reform, women’s rights, energy security etc..
