The United States military presence in Georgia was small at first, but grew rapidly as the country became embroiled in War of 1812. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson was elected president of the United States and he ordered a mounted army to invade Georgia. This invasion led to the Battle of Jonesborough and the annexation of Georgia by the United States. The first American military installation in Milledgeville was Fort McAllister which opened in 1822. The fort served as a base for American forces during the Creek Indian Wars and also played an important role in suppressing slave rebellions throughout North America. After Alabama gained statehood from Tennessee in 1800, General Hugh Wigglesworth decided to establish a garrison at Milledgeville on land that had been given to him by Chief Cutchins. Wigglesworth named Fort McAllister after his friend, Major-General James McIntosh, commander of British forces occupying Mobile Bay during the Creek Indian Wars. Milledgeville was developed as a commercial center due to its location near navigable waterways and its access to tobacco crops and cotton fields. The town experienced rapid growth after it became known as the " Processing Capital of America." By 1860, Milledgeville had over 20 businesses including six textile mills and several grocery stores. defensive fortifications were constructed around town during this time and it is believed that they helped protect against attacks by Confederate raiders or Native Americans (the Creek Indian Tribe did not recognize President Abraham Lincoln). In 1865, following Ulysses S Grant's victory over Confederate general Robert Ewell at Appomattox Court House, Union troops burned down all but one building within sight of Fort McAllister; this building still stands today as Independence Hall Garage #2 . Despite these precautions against attack, however, on April 12th 1865 four men entered Fort McAllister through an open gate and destroyed most of what remained inside before fleeing into Cherokee County . On May 8th 1865 two more men walked intoFortMcAllisterand set firetoitbeforefleeingintoChitown . Firefighters arrived on site just minutes before flames could reach interior walls and extinguished them without causing any damage . It is estimated that more than 100 people were killed or wounded when FortMcAllister came down . Today only a few walls remain standing from what once housed over 200 buildings
