It lies on the east side of the Savannah River, about 12 miles (19 km) south of Atlanta and 8 miles (13 km) north of Milledgeville proper. The area that now makes up Milledgeville was first settled by English colonists in 1755 as part of the Plantation of Augusta. In 1820, a group of Scots-Irish men fromuidnion led by Colonel John Lawson purchased 1,000 acres (400 ha) along the river for $5 per acre. In 1828–29 General James Ewell laid out a road from Macon to Athens which he named after himself and called "Ewell's Bridge". Today this road is known as "John Fife Highway" and runs through downtown Milledgeville. During World War II, many Milledgeville residents fought in the service either directly or indirectly including navy submariners who manned submarines at Submarine Base Kings Bay on Savannah Island off Milledgeville's coast; Air Force pilots flying combat missions over Europe during Operation Overlord; and local farmers providing Ready Room services to troops fighting in North Africa and Europe during World War I.
