Milledgeville is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 9,792 at the 2010 census. Milledgeville is the county seat of Fulton County. In 1802, two brothers named George and John Milledge founded what is now Milledgeville. The town was named after them because they had an area that was milled into flour. In 1821, Daniel Boone arrived in what is now Milledgeville and established a post office here. He named it for General James Monroe who had been his friend and traveling companion on his tour of North America before he became president. A Presbyterian church was built in the town in 1826 and serves as its present day municipal building. The town experienced heavy growth during Reconstruction following the American Civil War due to its importance as a transportation hub for soldiers and their families moving northward from Atlanta to find work or relief efforts during the reconstruction period. As a result of this growth, many businesses were opened here such as Wartime Chevrolet Sales which served troops on leave from Fort McAllister until the end of World War II; J & J Cakeshop which started out selling small items like English muffins but grew into one of the largest cake entrepreneurs in Georgia; Southern Pacific Railroad's (SPR) main line running through Milledgeville led to new jobs for local citizens; along with other businesses opening up during this time including several hotels/motels catering to troops stationed in nearby Marietta while other industries took off such as garment manufacturing thanks to advances made in fabric technology at that time - Today, much of what once existed within downtown Milledgeville has been replaced by high-rise buildings used for commercial purposes such as Macy's Department Stores (), Phillips 66 (), BP Gas Station () and Home Depot ().
