It wasn’t until 1847 that any type of espresso machine became available for purchase outside Italy; however, Italian brewers continued to use kettles with water heated on an open flame until 1850 when a French engineer developed an electric oven designed to produce café au lait at home using steam pressure instead – this eventually led to espresso machines becoming common throughout Italy and Europe by 1895. By 1912 all types of electric machines had been replaced by hand pumps used exclusively by baristas; however, manual pump espresso machines continued to be popular into the 2000s!
