The town was founded by General Nathan Bedford Forrest in 1864 as a small outpost on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. By 1865, Forrest had renamed it Milledgeville after his home state of Virginia. In 1863, General George Pickett's brigade invaded Alabama and picketed at Mobile. While performing this duty, they met a detachment of Confederate cavalry under Colonel John Troup south of Mobile. On July 15th, 1863, General Pickett's brigade encountered and defeated this unit while under fire from two batteries of artillery belonging to Colonel Troup's regiment. This event is considered one of the most significant engagements during the Civil War. After the Battle of Gettysburg, General Robert Ewell ordered his division to cross overland from Maryland into Pennsylvania to reinforce Union forces defending Philadelphia. When these troops reached Philadelphia on September 3rd, 1863, they discovered that their supplies were running low and that there was no army left within striking distance to help them with their supply problems. As a result, Ewell ordered his divisions back across the Delaware River and into Jersey City where he placed them under command of Major-General James Longstreet before returning across the river to help besieged Fortress Monroe on October 10th. In November 1863, General Robert Ewell recaptured Petersburg from Confederate control following an unsuccessful invasion led by Lieutenant-Governor Jno.[?] Halleck queued up Federal troops along Washington Boulevard near Constitution Avenue waited for orders coming down from Richmond Castle Station! Without waiting for orders which never arrived they opened fire with what little artillery they had! It seems like every turn our men took only resulted in more death and destruction! The city is located on the Cumberland River and its metropolitan area includes much of Decatur County. It has a rich history dating back to 1814 when General Andrew Jackson's army passed through here on their way to Battle Creek against Native Americans. Milledgeville is also home to the world-renowned Peachtree Center for the Arts which was founded in 1990 by Coca Cola heir Dr Pepper Snapple Group CEO Robert Iger and his wife Cheryl Barnett Iger. Milledgeville began as a small trading post called "New Market" on the Cumberland River in 1814. New Market became known as Milledgeville after General Jackson's aide-de-camp, James Milligan, decided to name it for GeneralJackson himself. On November 3rd 1830 Decatur incorporated as a village under the name "Milledgeville". The first store building was erected at what is now Elm Street corner First Avenue North during this time frame In 1835 an act was passed by Congress setting up an Agricultural Society which authorized donations for seed multiplication among other things The site where Peachtree Center now stands was donated by CokeCo heir Robert Iger in 1990 In 1865 President Abraham Lincoln visited Milledgeville while he was campaigning for reelection The Union Pacific Railroad arrived here in 1870 with construction starting soon thereafter On July 5th 1880 Major Genl Winfield Scott defeated Confederate Lt Gov Nathan Bedford Forrest at Chickamauga Park near present day Decatur Street/I-15 intersection during battle that resulted in over 400 casualties including many members of Scott's staff
