The United States Air Force Academy in Milledgeville, Georgia is the only air force academy in the United States and the only one in the world that offers a full four-year undergraduate curriculum in aviation. The Academy was founded on August 30, 1918 as an air service school for cadets of the Georgia National Guard. It became operational as an air force school on October 1, 1920. Today, The United States Air Force Academy has a student body of over 10,000 men and women who are sworn to serve our country and protect its citizens with flying arms. Cadets at The United States Air Force Academy receive extensive training in all branches of the military including: artillery, engineering, flight operations research & development (FORD), pilot education & training (PECT), intelligence gathering & exploitation (IG&E), and military law enforcement/counterintelligence services (MILI). Milledgeville is a city located in the state of Georgia. The population was 508 at the 2010 census, up from 463 at the 2000 census. Milledgeville is considered a small city by metro Atlanta standards, but it has managed to maintain its charm and character despite its smaller size. Milledgeville takes its name from General George Washington’s plantation on which he resided during his early years as a soldier in America. When Congress moved the presidential seat from Philadelphia to Milledgeville in 1801, they chose this location because of its strategic location on the Chattahoochee River between Chattanooga and Dalton. Milledgeville also had good soil for farming, making it an important center during the Georgia Revolution of 1811-1812. In 1832, when Mississippi seceded from Alabama and became a part of the United States, Milledgeville became part of Georgia too. The first businesses in Milledgeville were cattle feed stores and wagon crews that transported goods downriver to Chattanooga for export. By 1850, there were five stores and 30+ workers servicing 1,500 customers per day. The town quickly outgrew its original boundaries and began annexing neighboring townships until it reached present-day downtown MilledgeVILLE in 1885. During World War II many munitions factories were built here including those responsible for creating napalm – one of history’s most destructive weapons – along with other vital technologies such as radar technology and aircraft design. However, today much of these factories are preserved as historical landmarks or used commercially by locals who enjoy exploring them for their unique architecture and storybook atmosphere

The city also features several parks such as Elm Park located on downtown square which includes a skateboard park, baseball diamond/softball diamond, soccer field, tennis courts, and walking paths; Freedom Park located east of downtown square which includes a playground, basketball court/parking lot for overflow parking Gadsden Street Market featuring local artisan goods from various vendors along Gadsden Street between US Hwy 11 & 12 - featuring fruit stands (including one with fresh squeezed lemonade stand), craft stores (including two Moravian sistersmiths selling handmade leather purses & belts), jewelry stores (including four Tiffany & Co.-owned boutiques), shoe stores (four JCPenney locations) as well as gas stations across from Gadsden Mall on I-16 southbound side serving both locals/drivers/motorists while northbound traffic travels through Walmart at US Hwy 278
