Milledgeville is a small town in Georgia that was once known for its cotton plantations. Today, the town is home to a number of businesses and residents. The population of Milledgeville was 1,868 as of the 2010 census.Milledgeville is located in Fulton County, Georgia on the border of Cobb County. It lies near Junction City and Decatur. The first organized settlement in what is now Milledgeville was made up of families who had come overland from Alabama during the 1830s. The name "Milledgeville" was given to the place by General Sam Jones because it resembled a millstone that had been found thereabouts. In 1837, Colonel John Rankin built his plantation here and named it after his brother-in-law, Senator Thomas McNurty Milledge (1797-1872).Rankin was one of the founders of Atlanta and served as mayor three times before his death in 1857. His plantation passed through several hands until it was purchased by Judge John Hudspeth in 1875 and put into operation as Hudspeth's cotton ginnery which still stands today. After many years production ceased at the ginnery due to lack of competition and it lay idle for some time before being sold to Jno Hargrave in 1908 who restored it to its original glory as a Manufacturing Company Warehouse Building Museum No 2 on Courthouse Square today! The early days are marked by violence between white men and black men which led to occasional raids on slaveholders' plantations by whiteGA troopers called "Wanderers". These events increased when neighboring Cobb County became embroiled in a territorial dispute with Georgia over these lands south of Fort Pickens where most whites lived while Africans worked on their estates or mined coal nearby outside town limits (see also African American life in rural areas during this period). Finally, after Indian Removal efforts failed following Confederate defeat at Bull Run (1861), white farmers turned their attention increasingly towards growing cotton for export instead; however, they did not stop raiding old slaves' fields so long as they could collect payment from them either through labor or goods sent back home including clothing, food, tools or carriages used for transportation purposes; blacks were left alone within their own estates with little authority over their lives other than hunting/farming subsistence levels allowed under state law without benefit from licenses or other formal rights enjoyed by Whites elsewhere.. This situation culminated tragically with Denmark Vesey's revolt against slavery inside Confederate lines at Dover Barracks on July 22nd 1861 which resulted in more than 400 deaths among freedmen/enslaves plus about 8000 captured Union soldiers - all prior plans for peaceful transfer fromGA custody directly to interior Confederacy were derailed . Milledgedeville soon followed suit becoming an important crossroads leading out into open country During this time much bloodshed took place here but no one ever faced justice... sortof! During Reconstruction period following Civil War Reconstruction laws were written based largely upon White Southern views rather than reflecting reality on ground where Blacks dwelt unrestricted under Jim Crow system then current government operated) In 1865 Secretary OF War Stanton ordered general Robert Ewell begin large military build up along GA frontier seeking operations against two thousand freedmen living beyond line demarcated by US Army troops trying finally make peace earlier signed at Point Lookout (now Chattanooga) By 1870 most freedmen living east cfline had moved westward into states such as Oklahoma & Kansas ont he eastern edge af Georgia & Tennessee /This area eventually became Cherokee Nation
