Mcdonough is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 24,895 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County. The Mcdonough Historic District is a National Register of Historic Places listings district. The town began as a small frontier settlement in 1802 by Hugh McDonough and his brother-in-law John Fogg, two Scotsmen who had come overland from Scotland to escape religious persecution there. They named their new community after General James Wilkinson's victory over the French at Yorktown in 1781. By 1830, however, the area around present-day Mcdonough had become largely Indian territory under Creek control. A group of Scottish Presbyterians led by Andrew Johnston founded what became known as McKnightville on Allatoona River east of present-day downtown Mcdonough on November 1, 1830; they named it for General James Kirkpatrick's successful effort to drive the Creek forces out of Georgia that year. In 1835, McKnightville was renamed for Richard Mclntyre McGillivray Governor of Florida; he had been instrumental in obtaining Florida independence from Spain and served as its first Ulysses S Grant when he succeeded Polk in 1841). The Post Office was established at McKnightville on January 1, 1836; it remained open until 1966 when it was moved to Dalton (then called Decatur), Alabama. In 1840–1849, local farmers formed a cooperative society which became one of the largest agricultural societies in eastern North America . In 1860s and 1870sMcDonough experienced rapid growth due to cotton plantation work by white people seeking land grants scattered throughout East Tennessee and South Carolina following Union victories during the American Civil War; most were revoked after Reconstruction ended with African Americans gain political power in those states. However some aspects of this growth such as banking and industry survived into the 21st century including education through nearby Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University) and numerous businesses such as Dillard's department store chain which still operates today

Mcdonough, Georgia is a small city located in the US state of Georgia. The population was 9,717 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of McIntosh County. The town was established in 1810 by Captain John McDonough and his family. The first store opened in 1811. In 1830, Mrs. Anna Todd donated land to the town for a school and church. The first post office was established in 1835. In 1872, McMahan Brothers built a mill on the river near present day Mcdonough Plaza. In 1886, Mrs. Lilla Hinton donated land for a public square and park that still stands today on Main Street between Patton and McClure Avenues. In 1913, the McIntosh County Courthouse was built on what is now Park Avenue in downtown Mcdonough with funding from Mrs Annie McFarlane Smith and her husband Dr Austin McFarlane Sr.. When it closed in 1975 it served as the first purpose-built courthouse for McIntosh County which then moved to its current location on State Route 280 east of town in 1985.. In 1965, legislation was passed granting voting rights to African Americans within McIntosh County while also providing funds for new schools within the community through an act of Congress known as "A bill to establish black high schools". On November 3rd that year, voters approved this plan by an overwhelming margin with over 2200 ballots cast.. This effort led directly to Black History Month celebrations taking place each October throughout MCdonough until 2008 when all black high school students were integrated into their respective white schools following passage of Atlanta's " integrate education law" ( Public Act 98-582). After many years of peaceful protests from some residents who felt they had been shut out of development opportunities due to race; plans were made to demolish or gut most old Negro Baptist churches within MCDonought City limits leading up to final approval by citizens on November 15th 2009 after more than 4 months deliberations; conversions/updates/renovations will commence soon at both St Philips Episcopal Church & Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Catholic Church located just east off Patton Road adjacent to Faulkner Middle School; finally eliminating any remaining vestiges of historical negro religious activity within city limits: these two churches have since become contributing members & mascots of newly developed Faulkner High School! Since majority-minority enrollment has occurred without incident at all high Schools within municipality including all but one (Faulkner High) - educational opportunities are presently available for all citizens regardless race or ethnicity
Mcdonough was founded in 1802 by James McDonough and his brothers. The town grew rapidly after the discovery of a large rich coal field in the area. In 1814, the McK Donough House, now a state historical marker, was built on the original homestead of James and John McAughray. By 1825, there were over 100 houses in Mcdonough. The population had increased to 1,500 by 1830. The first school in Mcdonough was established in 1824 by Rev. John Whitehead. A log cabin served as the school building until 1840 when a larger frame building was erected on land donated by Amos Davenport. The first teacher at Mcdonough School was Mrs. Higginson from 1826-1829; she later became headmaster at Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University). In 1865, the town voted to incorporation and rapidly developed into an important cotton center with many mills and businesses along Railroad Street and State Route 123A (later Interstate 95). In 1907, McFadden Brothers Brewing company opened its doors in what is now downtown McFadden's Bar & Grill; it would remain open until 1993 when it closed due to economic difficulties. In 1915-1917 two men named McNaughton constructed a small dam across McLaughlin Lake that would provide water for much of central Georgia; this project also helped spur growth within McFadden’s community as well as elsewhere near Macdonald Dam during those years (see Central Georgia Water Development Project). In 1948-1953 construction began on Interstate 85 through central Georgia and McFadden’s community became part of the newly created Atlanta metropolitan area; however, most of McFadden’s business district still functions today withinAtlanta proper despite being located some 20 miles east of downtown Atlanta proper.
