Mcdonough, Georgia is a small town located in Fulton County, Georgia. The population was 7,854 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1813 by General James McDonough and his wife Catharine Hunt. The first store was built on what is now Fourth Street. In 1827, the land that would become Mcdonough was donated by General Nathanael Greene to help fund the purchase of a plantation in adjacent Baldwin County. The village developed around this new location and soon had a post office, schoolhouse, store, and two churches. In 1830, John GOPeaux purchased from General George Rogers Clark a tract of land which became today's Mcdonough Township. In 1836, McMahan married Emily Post who had also moved to Fulton County from Tennessee two years earlier. They began to raise crops and build homes near what is now Piedmont Rd.. A year later they added another home when their daughter Anna were born; this house still stands today on Third Avenue East in the Village District (just east of where it once stood). Mrs. McMahan died suddenly during childbirth and young Ann followed suit less than three months later- an event which has been memorialized annually with a drive through her garden into her old home by local parents/guardians known as "The Girls' Drive." Anna's death forever changed not only the course of life for all who live within earshot but also has left an enduring legacy along Third AvenueEast: her memory continues to be invoked whenever people contemplates starting their own businesses or taking on larger challenges - something that families hereabouts enjoy more than most anywhere else! John died in 1902 and Sarah Jane lived until her death in 1916. She is buried at the Methodist Cemetery in Mcdonough.
