McDonough is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 24,043 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Fulton County and the county seat of Fulton County. The first settler in McDonough was James Cook who arrived in 1785. The area that now comprises McDonough was first settled by Creek Indian Chief John Ross on a small island near what is now downtown McDonough. In 1802, Captain James Cook sailed past this point on his way from England to America and named the island after himself - "Mc Donough" meaning "Island of Captain Cook". In 1806, Colonel William Bartram located a post office at what is now Main Street and named it after General Robert Ewing's father - "Ewingville". However, no town took form until 1830 when farmers started to settle around what are now Fourth Street and Campbell Avenue. By 1840, there were about 100 residents in downtown McDonough and many more scattered throughout the rural areas surrounding it; by 1850 there were only 10 residents left living within downtown boundaries. Another early resident of McDonough was Rev. Elijah Hicks (1796-1873). Hicks purchased 2 acres (0.8 km2) of land north of Third Street in 1824 for $600; he built a small log cabin called Hickory House which served as his home until his death six years later at age 72 years old. He left behind an extensive legacy in business and education including establishment of both Baptist churches – First Baptist Church (now part of Presbyterian Hospital) northwest of town center dating back to 1829 and Second Baptist Church southeast corner Third Street/Hickory Lane erected 1851-52; purchase by Methodists from Revs Wm Whitefield & others c1859; first Methodist Episcopal church north side 3rd Ave east side c1900 house impropriated from Ebenezer Cooke family 1800s

In 1802, the town of Mcdonough was founded by Captain John A. MacDonough and his family on a tract of land that had been granted to him by the Creek Nation. The town grew quickly, and in 1810, it was incorporated as a village under the name of "Mc DONOUGH". By 1830, Mcdonough had a population of around 100 people. The early years of the 19th century were difficult for Mcdonough. The Panic of 1837 led to an economic decline in Georgia, and many businesses closed their doors. However, Mayor Jameson Dickey managed to keep the community afloat with financial support from local farmers. In 1840, MacDonough voted to secede from Georgia and become an independent republic. During the Civil War (1861-1865), Mcdonough sided with the Confederacy against the Union. Despite this decision, Mayor Dickey refused to leave his citizens behind and remained in office until 1865. After the war ended, he resumed his business career and died in 1870 at age 80 years old. Today, Mcdonough is a largely agricultural community with small businesses dotting its streetsides. It is also home to several historical museums which offer visitors insight into its history and culture.
