Marietta is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 9,527 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County. The name may come from the French word "mariétte" meaning "a maiden." The first permanent settler in Marietta was John Morse who arrived in 1802 and founded a gristmill on the Chattahoochee River. Morse's mill became one of the largest flour mills in Georgia. In 1812 Nicholas Swain built a log cabin near what is now downtown Marietta and began to trade goods with Indians for goods they had cached on the Chattahoochee River. He also built a sawmill and gristmill around this time. By 1830, there were three mills operating in Marietta: one by Nicholas Swain, one by John Morse, and one by John Auld. In 1833 Samuel Kirkland donated land to establish an academy which would become known as Tuskegee University. In 1840 Marietta became part of Union County when it was formed from parts of Union and McIntosh Counties. In 1845 it passed through annexation by Clayton County, Georgia; however, it reverted back to Fulton County following its admission into that county in 1850 under state law championed by James Millington Polk (1844–1925). From 1870 until 1986 Marietta was served as the capital of Atlanta metropolitan area; however, since then it has been home to Atlanta’s main airport, Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (HJAX) located about 10 miles east of town center on I-285/ Loop 202
