Marianeta, Georgia is a small town in the Atlanta metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, its population was 5,815. The community takes its name from Maria, the Blessed Virgin. Maria's Parish Church is located in Marietta and is one of the oldest churches in GA. It was built between 1853-1855 as a Congregationalist chapel on Commerce Street. When MARA (the women's national institute) moved to Atlanta in 1885, they donated the building to MARA Georgia for use as their Institute Building and it has been used ever since. The church features beautiful stained glass windows that depict scenes from the life of Jesus Christ including his crucifixion and resurrection. The interior also has beautiful mahogany woodwork and marble altar pieces dating back to 1907. The parish motto "In pace requiescat" means "In peace may God rest."

Marietta, Georgia was founded in 1802 by the Cherokee Nation. The town developed as a trading post on the Chattahoochee River and soon became a center of slave trade. Marietta was sacked by American forces during the American Revolution and again during the War of 1812. After that, it grew slowly but surely into an agricultural center with a large slave population. In 1851, Marietta became a state capital and adopted the name of Atlanta. The city's growth continued through the years and by 1900 it had over 200,000 residents. However, due to persistent problems such as racism and poverty, Atlanta's population began to decline around 1930. In 1965, Marietta was made an urban area and experienced rapid growth once again thanks to its rich cultural history. Today, Marietta is one of the most diverse cities in Georgia with a wide variety of cultures represented. Its popular tourist destinations include downtown MARIETTA (the metropolitan area), Centennial Park/Highway 99E (a nature preserve), Mount Carmel Baptist Church (a historically black church), Stone Mountain Park (an outdoor amusement park), and Pinson Place Mall which opened in 2002 along Interstate 285 adjacent to Philips Arena
In 1793, the area saw its first white settler, John Todd. He erected a cabin on what is now Marietta Creek and named it Todd's Ferry. In 1801, the first courthouse was built in what is now downtown Marietta. The town began to grow rapidly after settlers started arriving from all over Georgia and Tennessee. By 1825, Marietta had a population of around 100 people. In 1827, the first school was built in the town and classes were initially held in an old mill on Trade Street. In 1830, the town identified itself as a city and began to build its own infrastructure such as Streets and Cables (now Peachtree Street). On November 1, 1830, Marietta became part of Cobb County when it was organized from parts of Fulton County.
